Welcome to this month's edition of the Danemco newsletter.  A beautiful fall season is here and the potato harvest is over here in Southeast  Idaho.  Let's dig in to this month's edition of the Danemco newsletter by talking about writing good content for your website, announce the Websites For Quilters book, and talk about what's new at Danemco.

Education - Writing Good Content

Content is like the water in the bottle, the food on the plate, the gift in the box.  Although you may have a beautiful website design (like an attractive bottle, plate, or box), good content is necessary if you want your website visitors to stay, come back, or purchase from you.  From my personal experience and my experience working with others, preparing content is not easy.  However, here are five tips to guide you:
  • Cut Down The Word Count. People normally don't read your website like they read a book. They scan as they might when reading a newspaper.  One study suggests to eliminate half the number of words you would normally use if possible.  Photos and illustrations help tremendously with this.
  • Important Information At The Top. You can learn a lot from reporters by studying how newspaper articles are structured.  They are written to be easily scanned.  They use bold headlines that describe the paragraphs to follow.  In a particular body of text, they put the most important information in the first few paragraphs and leave the background information at the bottom.
  • Use Headings. It is good to use paragraph headings to describe what follows.  For example, when reading a long article, the author usually puts a heading that describes the following section.  This makes the article easier to scan.
  • Use Bold, Italics, and Highlighting. When you emphasize key words with bold lettering, italics, or highlighting, it makes it easier to scan.  If your text were describing a sale on your website, you would like to emphasize the location or what people can expect from the sale.  It is not recommended to underline words for emphasis on the web because people think underlined text means that the text is a clickable link.  They may try to click the underlined words and wonder why their browser is not taking them to a new page.
  • Use Lists. Websites that use bulleted or numbered lists of items also make it easier for people to read.  Put the most important items at the top of a list so that the reader can get the gist of what follows – making it easier for them to scan the entire list.

Book Announcement & Special Offer

I often am asked how to effectively run an online business for the quilting industry.  We strive to help every one of our clients succeed through our products, service, and education.  Our team has set up over a hundred quilting-related websites, and have talked to many more talented and wise business people.  After months of research and many interviews, I have written a comprehensive how-to guide with over 200 tips in how to effectively run an online business for the quilting industry, just in time for the International Quilt Market in Houston last weekend.  The book, titled Websites For Quilters, covers topics in depth such as search engine optimization, website promotion and advertising, blogging, e-commerce, website design, how to write effective newsletters, case studies from successful online quilting-related businesses, and much more.

We sold out of all of our books from the first printing in three days!  We are preparing the second printing and are offering free shipping to Danemco's newsletter subscribers only. Call or order online and use the discount code 'wfqbook'  during checkout by the 12th of November.  For more information about the book, and to order online, visit http://www.websitesforquilters.com/book/ .

What's New At Danemco & Dash Enhancements

October was a busy month.  Thanks to your input, we have made many updates to our products.

Gallery Improvements.  The Photo Gallery system in the Dash will now allow you to specify a sort order for the photos you have inside of an album. You can also  mark which photo or photos should represent an album.  Next and Previous Photo links are also now available, making it easier for people to browse your gallery.  Thanks to Darlene Epp from TrilliumHouseDesigns.com for the ideas.

Take Surveys Using Form Admin.  Danemco has programmed a flexible form system available to install onto your Dash system.  For example, you can create a form to ask your customers questions about your products, services, etc.  You can also convert paper forms to online forms to make it easier for people to send you order forms, warranty registrations, etc.  You can create text input boxes, checkboxes, multiple-choice options, image or file uploads, etc.  Contact us if you would like a demonstration of this system.

Image Uploader Shortcut.  For those of you using the Image Upload system on the dash to upload images for your flatpages, we have created a shortcut.  From the Edit Flatpage screen, a new orange up-arrow icon now appears.  You can upload your images there, and select them from the Insert/Edit Image icon.  This saves you the time of going back to the Dash home page to upload your photos before editing your flat pages.

Newsletter Sent Notification.   The newsletter system will now send you an e-mail letting you know that the newsletter successfully sent, and how many copies of the newsletter were sent.

Better Newsletter Bounce Processing.  The newsletter system, by default, will deactivate your newsletter subscribers if a copy of the newsletter comes back with a delivery error.  You can now set how many times a particular e-mail address bounces before automatically deactivating that subscriber.  From the Dash, click on Newsletter, then Settings, and then Add Setting.  Put bounce_threshold as the name, and the number 3 as the value, then hit the Save button.  Thanks to Connie Sue from AppleBlossomQuilts.com for the suggestion.

Spam Filtering Through Google & Postini Available.  If you are interested in adding a better spam filtering service to your Danemco e-mail accounts, we have teamed up with Google & Postini, a spam filtering service, to offer better protection from unwanted e-mail.  Prices are $10 per e-mail account per year (less than $1 a month).

FedEx Shipping Available. Those using the Danemco Shop system can now receive a live shipping rate quote from FedEx, along with USPS and UPS.

“Design Board” System.  For any of you that may be selling fabric or quilting designs online, this feature is for you.  People visiting your site can view their cart items in a "design board" -- drag and drop their cart items around the screen to see how the colors of the different products mesh together.  We demonstrated this new feature in Houston this past weekend; a demonstration will be available on one of our websites shortly.  Please call or e-mail if you are interested in  this service.  thanks to Patricia Ritter from UrbanElementz.com for the suggestion.

Voluntary Link Exchange

As many of you already know, building incoming links will increase the likelihood of visitors to your website as well as increase your search engine rankings.  However, it is sometimes hard to find others who will link to your site.  If you are interested in exchanging links with other Danemco clients, please let me know, and I will get you in touch with those that have shown interest.  Thanks to Geri Richardson from GrannieG.com for the suggestion.

Make Danemco Better

I am compiling a list of ways to improve the way our products work, subjects for future newsletters, and ways to improve our service to you.  If you have any ideas of how to improve the way Danemco operates, please let me know.  Please call or e-mail your suggestions to my e-mail address and include “Make Danemco Better” in the subject.

Thanks to a suggestion last month, we have updated a few of the login screens on the old Dash system to make data entry go much faster.
